General Information

Under Colorado law, governing boards of public institutions of higher education can specify requirements for the health and safety of students attending that institution.

The Colorado School of Mines has offered health insurance to our students since the 1960’s.

LEGAL AUTHORITY

Beginning in 1991, through action by the Board of Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines, all students are required to have health insurance as a condition of enrollment. [See copy of 1991-92 Brochure.] This requirement has not changed in nearly 20 years. Under Colorado law 23-5-106., C.R.S., institutions of higher education that had such program in existence on 1/1/1994 can require students to purchase health insurance or health care services. [see copy of 1993-94 Brochure.]

Unless otherwise specified in the current SHBP Brochure, the following students, must regardless of the number of credit hours enrolled, as a condition of enrollment, have health insurance that meets or exceeds CSM's coverage requirements:

      *   All degree-seeking students, regardless of credit hours.

*       All International Students (F and J visas), regardless of degree-seeking status, must purchase the SHBP, unless they meet specific requirements for waiver.  International students may only waive on paper, they cannot waive online.  Students who are enrolling are required to enroll online as soon as they know their Colorado address.

The following groups of students are not eligible for the SHBP: Students not meeting either of the conditions stated above, and

1.       Non-degree U.S. Citizens and permanent residents regardless of credit hours enrolled

2.       Students failing to make sufficient academic progress towards a degree as defined by the Colorado School of Mines,

3.       Students found to be enrolled in a degree program at CSM only for the purposes of obtaining health insurance coverage.

4.       Students enrolled at another local college and are secondarily enrolled in a course or courses at CSM through a reciprocity agreement.

REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF!

To determine if your current plan qualifies to waive enrollment in the SHBP, your plan must meet each of the following coverage requirements:

  • has a lifetime maximum benefit of at least $2,000,000 (with no yearly or per condition maximum benefit that would reduce coverage);
  • includes participating health care providers in the Denver metro area for both emergency and non-emergency health care services;
  • includes prescription drug benefits;
  • provides at least 20 outpatient visits for mental health care services and provides at least 30 days of inpatient mental health care services (including emergency psychiatric admissions);
  • coverage is in effect on the first day of classes without any waiting period or pre-existing condition exclusion and will remain in effect for the 10-11 academic year;
  • has a deductible of $500 or less (if the deductible is more than $500 you verify the ability to pay for medical expenses that are subject to the deductible); and
  • has coverage while traveling abroad (if current plan does not have this coverage, students must purchase additional travel insurance).
